Sixth Form Careers Events
We encourage our students to participate in as many careers events as possible throughout their sixth form journey. Here are a few of the events we had in 2023-2024.
Operation Live at the Bishops Stortford College
On May 1st, 10 Year 12 students hoping to pursue a career in the medical or veterinary field were kindly invited by the Bishops Stortford College to an Operation Live event they were hosting. The students spent the day learning about anaesthetics and infection control, performed brain dissection, eye dissection, gastric tract dissection, pulmonary-thoracic dissection and cardio-thoracic dissection.
Operation Live is an experience day built off the back of 12 years of getting students into medical careers, 44 combined years of teaching anatomy and physiology, offering medical preparation ahead of students applying to university. We would like to thank the Bishops Stortford College for kindly inviting us to spend the day with them.
Here’s what the students said about the day:
Faith, Year 12: “On Wednesday 1st May, I and a group of Aspiring Medics attended the Operating Theatre Live Event kindly hosted by Bishops Stortford College.
As an Aspiring Dermatologist, this was a surreal experience that further sparked my interest in Medicine. “
Joshua, Year 12: “Reflecting on my experience at the operating theatre live, I would say that it was a very enriching and valuable experience for an aspiring medical student and doctor like myself ,as it really was a great opportunity to gain some hands-on insight into the medical field especially in the field of surgery.
We started the day off learning about the history behind anatomy and the Key Historical anatomists behind this. We were then equipped with a stethoscope and scrubs- it was almost like we were already doctors prepping for surgery! From preparing anaesthesia to gaining a greater insight into the gastrointestinal system of a Pig (which was rather smelly!),
It was a wonderful experience and kept me and my fellow students in awe and helped us gain a deeper insight into the world of medicine."
Year 12, University of Hertfordshire Taster Day
On Thursday 6th June the Year 12 cohort went to the University of Hertfordshire for the day to sample subject lectures and workshops of their choice. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to explore a local university in the steps of a university student, explore campus life, visit student accommodation and sample subjects that interest them. Just a few of the many lectures offered included; Dietics, Engineering, Nursing, Paramedic Science, Film and Media, Midwifery, Law, Advocacy, Physiotherapy, Astrophysics, Pharmacy, Sports Coaching and many more. The University of Hertfordshire also offered talks on student finance, the UCAS application process, how to write a personal statement, student life and degree apprenticeships.
Overall, it was a great day. Our feedback survey showed that 98% of the attending students enjoyed the trip, and 95% of the students believed the trip was beneficial to concreting their next steps.
John, Year 12: “I went to two lectures which were both informative and interesting”
Laura, Year 12: “The first lecture I went to was Diagnostic Radiography which I enjoyed very much. Then the second lecture I went to was Nursing…. I went took look at the student accommodation. After that, I went on a general tour of the campus which included visiting the onsite cafes/shops and I spoke to a group of students who are currently studying Therapeutic Radiography, Diagnostic Radiography, Midwifery and Nursing”
Year 12, Trip to the London Summer University and Employer Careers Fair at the Emirates Stadium
On Friday 21st June the Year 12 cohort visited the Emirates Stadium to mingle with hundreds of universities and many apprenticeship providing employers. The trip was a fantastic opportunity for the students to speak face to face with universities about courses, societies and facilities within the universities. Students left buzzing with bags and uni merchandise filled with prospectuses.
Sky Studios Elstree, Careers Talk
At the end of March Sky Studios came into school to speak with our Year 12 Film and Media classes about the apprenticeship opportunities they offer and what working for Sky Studios is really like. They spoke of their Future Talent Programme (formally known as the ‘Content Academy’) which is a 12-month paid placement designed to catapult school leavers and graduates into a career in Film and TV. The Future Talent Programme is located in their cutting-edge film studio in Hertfordshire, and will allow successful candidates to dive headfirst into the industry whilst working alongside some of the biggest names in the world.
The Sixth Form Enrichment week was full of career lead events, students received a careers talk from the RAF, local accountancy firm Price Bailey and received talks from the University of Essex and the University of Hertfordshire.
