Theology, Philosophy & Ethics
Mission Statement
To present an engagingly comprehensive and challenging content which is the basis of knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith, so that pupils continually deepen their religious and theological understanding
To present an authentic vision of the Church's moral and social teaching so that pupils can make a critique of the underlying trends in contemporary culture and society in order to develop their critical faculties so that they can relate their Catholic faith to daily life. Pupils are challenged to develop themselves and grow spiritually with the love of Christ in their hearts
To raise pupils' awareness of the faith and traditions of other religious communities in order to respect and understand them; to bring clarity to the relationship between faith and life, and between faith and culture.
Curriculum Intent: To deliver a broad and balanced curriculum, in line with diocesan directives, that encourages students to explore and reflect upon their faith and the beliefs of others. To help students to grow in spirituality and to recognise the role of Christianity in their personal lives, communities and the worldwide communion.
Core Theology, Philosophy & Ethics:
All Sixth Form students participate in this study module, which aims to develop awareness, knowledge and debate on a range of theological, philosophical and ethical issues, broadening academic skills and cultural awareness. The lessons are enriching and allow reflection on a range of topics and current affairs; making sense of the world, developing argument and challenging preconceptions. Students will study modules on (for example) Ethics, Science and Religion, Human Trafficking and Catholic Social Teaching.
This is one hour a week, and does not involve any homework, coursework or examination. Students have a written assessment (in class) at the end of each unit.
A Level Religious Studies
Students in Year 12 will follow a course which is provided by the Edexcel exam board. The three main areas of study are:
- Christianity: This includes religious figures and sacred texts, religious concepts and religious life, significant social and historical developments in religious thought, and religious practices and religious identity.
- Philosophy of Religion: This includes arguments for the existence of God, challenges to religious belief, religious experience, and religious language.
- Religion and Ethics: This includes ethical thought, deontological ethics, teleological ethics, and applied ethics.
Assessment takes the form of essays which are set for homework and in class.
There are examinations at the end of Year 12 and 13 (three two hour papers).
