St Mary’s Catholic School takes the National Youth Theatre by Storm!

Four students from St Mary’s Catholic School follow in the footsteps of Dame Helen Mirren, Daniel Craig, Sir Daniel Day-Lewis and many other notable alumni by winning a place at the prestigious National Youth Theatre. The National Youth Theatre discovers, develops and platforms exceptional performers and thea-tre technicians aged 14-25 from Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Holding nationwide auditions at 35 venues across the UK and auditioning over 5,000 young people. The talent of St Mary’s Catholic School students Fiorella Castagna Yr 13, Ellie Gallimore and Yvette Aygiri-Marti Yr 11 and Noel O'Loughlin Yr 10, shone to successfully win a place at the highly competitive national auditions.

The National Youth Theatre visited the school and were so impressed with the high quality performances and outstanding talent at the school they requested to host their auditions for the regional round in the Hume Theatre at St Mary’s Catholic School. Students from far and wide travelled to attend the auditions held in February and many awaited eagerly the results. Multi-talented Fiorella Castagna is currently Head girl at the school and is sitting her A level examinations to train to be a professional actor. As well as being selected by the NYT she has also gained a place at Drama School and will soon be treading the boards at the famous Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. Fiorella commented “I have always known I wanted to be an actor and studying Theatre Studies at St Mary’s has pushed me to achieve my dream, I am so excit-ed at the opportunities NYT can offer!”

Noel O’Loughlin, at only 14 will be one of the youngest actors to receive training from with this world re-nowned company. Noel, who is studying GCSE Drama at St Mary’s and is one of the stars of the school drama performances and showcases is delighted at his achievements.

Ellie Gallimore and Yvette Agiri-Martin both year 11 are currently studying for their GCSE examinations. Both girls are highly talented and skilled dancers and all aspects of performing arts. Ellie said “I have been acting and dancing since I was five and think being at St Mary’s has helped me to strive for a career as an actor. I am really thankful for everything that the school has done for me and as soon as I got my ac-ceptance email, I was so excited!”

Miss Gill, the Subject Leader for Drama was over the moon to have four talented students be selected at the same time. “I’m so excited that we have been so successful at the National Youth Theatre this year. I’m really proud of my incredible students to see that their hard work and dedication at rehearsals has paid off. It’s wonderful to see students going on to train in the professional theatre, I’m just waiting for one of them to bring back an Oscar one day!”
